CASE STUDY: UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO HOSPITAL

Challenge:
Voice Engineering for Enterprise- Wide Voice Communications Network

University Hospital (UH) is a 393 bed acute care and major teaching facility serving greater Denver and Colorado. The hospital services about 250,000 outpatients per year. UH is the teaching institution for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. UH is the region's leading tertiary and quarternary care and referral center and is designated Level 1 Trauma Center. US News & World Report rate “University Hospital the number 1 Hospital in Colorado”. 

 
Solution: Communications Room and Cable Plant Design

Responsible for providing Voice Engineering to University Hospital for their enterprise wide voice communications network. The project included engineering an 8000 port multi-location Private Branch exchange (PBX). The design included five off premise PBX systems networked together, transparently sharing voice mail, attendants, automatic call distribution (ACD) and Integrated Voice Response (IVR) functions. Several locations were networked via T-1 private network.  The data network was built on a fiber backbone locally and Telco Fiber Infrastructure (fiber service) for wide area connection.  Both the voice fiber T-1 network and SONET infrastructure for data were redundantly designed to provide University Hospital the highest reliability for life- sensitive communications.

 

Also responsible for developing a comprehensive, long-term dial plan to reallocate numbers by determining the most effective use of PBX feature codes, ease of dialing with the campus and impact on the sister institutions of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and National Jewish Hospital.

As part of the voice and data infrastructure design, developed a working floor plan for the installation of a new PBX and data networking systems in the MDF. The facility was engineered for voice and data equipment, air handlers, raceway, battery and power systems and functional workspace. To complete the design, interfaced directly with architects and trades to accommodate allowable ambient temperature, battery loading, entrance conduit sizing, airflow requirements. This entailed providing working CAD drawings and documentation to the field.
